ADJUSTING THE CONTRAST OF AN IMAGE
Contrast refers to the difference between the darkest and brightest areas in an image. Increasing contrast enhances this separation, making shadows darker and highlights brighter. Conversely, decreasing contrast reduces the difference between shadows and highlights, bringing shadows up and making highlights dimmer.
In editing, contrast affects the range of brightness from lightest to darkest in an image. For a more pronounced darkening effect, you can use high contrast. This makes bright areas brighter and dark areas darker, potentially making the picture almost pure black where details are lost in the darkness.
CONTRAST IN EDITING
In video editing, contrast helps to distinguish color differences and light variations between parts of the same image or screen. It impacts the mood, skin tone, and overall appeal of the video.
For example, consider the contrast between tall and short, fat and thin, or poor and rich. In photographs, contrast refers to the difference between light and dark colors.
Another example of contrast is a wall painted brown. If you place a purple object against it, the high contrast makes the object stand out, catching the viewer’s eye. Conversely, a yellow object on the same brown wall creates a lower contrast image.

The design principle of contrast uses different elements to capture attention, guide the viewer’s eye to a focal point, highlight important information, and add variety or drama to a design.
